Description
22 Squadron was formed in Durban in 1942 as a Torpedo Bomber Recce Squadron and were initially equipped with Ju 86 and Avro Anson aircraft. Later the squadron was issued with Venturas which were exensively used for maritime coastal patrols. In 1944 the squadron was redeployed to Malta where it carried out anti submarine operations. in 1945 the squadron was disbanded and then reformed in the Cape in 1954 with Venturas. These were replaced in 1964 when the squadron received Westland Wasp helicopters at AFB Ysterplaat. The wasps were replaced by Alouette III helicopters and later still puma helicopters and then Oryx helicopters were allocated to the squadron. The squadron enjoyed a close relationship with the SA Navy and its helicopters were placed aboard several ships in their anti submarine role.
