Description
35 Squadron was formed in1945 at the end of World war Two and was based in Natal where it flew Sunderlands on maritime coastal patrols. It was also responsible for ferrying South African troops back home from Cairo. In 1957 the squadron was redeployed to Cape Town to AFB Ysterplaat. In this year the Sunderlands were replaced by Shackleton aircraft which were used for maritime coastal patrols. In the 1990s the last of the Shackletons was stood down and the squadron's tasks were executed in Dakotas, as they do to this day. One Shackleton is still flying as part of the SAAF Museum and is based in Cape Town at AFB Ysterplaat.
